This design features the beautiful coastal flowering pea-family shrub called ‘ohai (Sesbania tomentosa). These rare native Hawaiian plants are only found on these islands, making them endemic as well as endangered.
‘Ohai has striking scarlet red to orange pea-shaped flowers that were once commonly used in lei making. Their foliage has a silver-hue that makes them a striking sight on a beach or rocky landscape.
It is exciting to see these beauties showing up more in landscaping as well as in protected places such as Ka’ena point on the island of O‘ahu
