The butterfly has always been a symbol of healing and transformation.
The Kamehameha butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) in this print is one of only two native Hawaiian butterflies. This print is particularly special to me because during a period of mysterious health problems, I made a design that showed both the butterfly as well as the caterpillars. The caterpillars were feeding on its larval plant, māmaki (Pipturus albidus), a nettle plant known for its healing qualities when brewed into a tea. I was soon thereafter diagnosed with a serious illness from which I’ve since recovered. It took a team of incredible doctors and nurses to get through it, but it also took the support of my family and friends.
During the many weeks of recovery, I was inspired to complete many more art patterns. As I healed, I completed this print depicting a kaleidoscope of butterflies to symbolize the hope, healing, love, and transformation of not only me, but also of the entire community around me that rallied, stayed the course, and transformed with me. During this time of healing, it became clear to me that love was everywhere, in froms that I had not been aware of before. These butterflies symbolize that love.
