THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-DRAWN DESIGN

Stories of the volcano on Hawai'i Island are legendary, best known as the volcano goddess Pele. She appears in many forms, as do her powerful clan of family members. She has many moods. Sometimes she is fiery and devastatingly beautiful. Sometimes she is dark, other times light. Old or young, you never know what form or mood you will encounter her in.

This fabric artwork depicts the lava pool of Halema‘uma‘u, the volcanic home of Pele. Sometimes the glow of the lava can be seen at night for miles as it swells, and at other times it shrinks back to a faint barely visible glow at the craters surface.

Sometimes flying above the lava on their way out to sea or nesting in the rocky cliffs, the Koa'e Kea (tropic birds) are a breathtaking sight at Halema‘uma‘u. These birds nest in the Crater walls, using the thermals from the hot lava below to soar above its red glow.
