Malolo
“Ka iʻa lele me he manu.”
The fish that flies like a bird.
‘Olelo No‘eau (Hawaiian Proverb), Mary Kawena Pukui
Malolo, or flying fish, live in the deep open ocean and feed on plankton. These fish appear to fly as they skip and glide in and out of the water when evading predators. Fishing boats use light at night, which often attracts plankton. Malolo sometimes end up jumping into the boats as they feed on the plankton. A tasty catch.
